Twig Presents $5,000 Check to Inova Alexandria to Support the

Carolyn Abshire Breast Cancer Care Fund

On October 7 th, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Twig President Lori Ring
presented a $5,000 check to Kristen Bentivegna, Director of Philanthropy for the Inova
Schar Cancer and Peterson Life with Cancer Centers, to support Inova Alexandria’s
Carolyn Abshire Breast Cancer Care Fund.
This fund, established in 1989 by the Twig and Carolyn Abshire, supports a variety of
breast cancer-related initiatives such as mammogram screenings, mentoring programs
(pairing women who’ve experienced breast cancer with newly diagnosed patients),
patient care (for example, paying for childcare or rent for indigent patients receiving
treatment), and other Life with Cancer programs. Recently, monies collected through
the Abshire Fund have been used to support Inova’s new mobile screening bus that
provides free services such as mammograms and pap smears to women throughout the
Alexandria area.
