The Twig Celebrates its 90th Anniversary at a Gathering on the Potomac

The Twig Celebrates its 90th Anniversary at a Gathering on the Potomac

For Immediate Release
April 22, 2023

Alexandria, VA — At a gathering of 140 guests, The Twig celebrated its 90th Anniversary at a party in a private home overlooking the Potomac River. The Twig is The Junior Auxiliary of the Inova Alexandria Hospital (IAH) and has been raising funds to support the hospital since 1933.  The Twig’s revenue is largely generated from its Thrift Shop and the Historic Alexandria Homes Tour in Old Town. The grand celebration was one of several events recognizing The Twig’s history of service, including a tour of the Lyceum’s “Alexandria Hospital: Women Mobilizing the Community” exhibit; a walking tour of The Twig’s and hospital’s former locations; a happy hour at the Thrift Shop; and a Sunday brunch.

Kathy Hirsch, Chair of the 90th Anniversary Committee, welcomed the guests and thanked the gracious hosts, Wendy and Charlie Mercer, for opening their home.  The Twig President, Michele Cumberland, and Alexandria’s Vice Mayor, Amy Jackson, were recognized for remarks; and both praised The Twig volunteers for their efforts and the tremendous contributions made to the Alexandria community over the years.  Ms. Cumberland described the organization’s most recent efforts, which will provide a half million dollars to IAH every 3 years. Specifically, Ms. Cumberland explained, “$200,000 will go for a breast reconstruction microscope post-surgery. The other $300,000 will go towards upgrading Alexandria Hospital’s trauma level so that people who are in serious accidents in the city don’t have to be transported to Inova Fairfax or Washington Hospital Center. They can be treated in their own community, making it easier for family to visit.”
