Press Release: Twig Volunteers Continue 90-Year Legacy with $2 Million     Gift to New Inova Alexandria Hospital Campus

Alexandria’s Twig Volunteers Continue Decades-Long Commitment to Inova Alexandria Hospital with Generous Gift Toward New Medical Campus

Alexandria, VA – March 19, 2026 – For generations, the dedicated volunteers of the Junior Auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital, known as The Twig, have played a quiet but powerful role in advancing healthcare in Alexandria. Through decades of fundraising, service and community leadership, Twig members have helped ensure that Inova Alexandria Hospital continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of the community.

Today, that legacy continues with The Twig’s newest commitment — a $2 million gift to support the future of Inova Alexandria Hospital at its new location in Landmark. This gift will support programs and facilities in the eastern region of Inova’s service area as part of the health system’s Do. More. Together. fundraising campaign, a comprehensive initiative to expand access to care, advance innovative services, and strengthen hospitals and clinics across Northern Virginia. This contribution adds to The Twig’s remarkable legacy, which has generated more than $7 million over the years in support of patient care, medical equipment and hospital programs. In recognition of their generous gift, the new hospital’s conference center will be named in honor of The Twig.

The new Inova Alexandria Hospital is currently under construction at the former Landmark Mall site and will serve as a state-of-the-art medical campus designed to expand access to advanced care for Alexandria and the surrounding region.

“This extraordinary commitment from The Twig reflects the deep partnership between our hospital and the Alexandria community,” said Rina Bansal, MD, President of Inova Alexandria Hospital. “For decades, Twig members have given their time, their energy and their resources to support patient care. Their newest gift will help ensure that the next generation of patients benefits from world-class facilities and services right here in Alexandria.”

Founded in 1933, The Twig has been a cornerstone of community philanthropy supporting Inova Alexandria Hospital for more than 90 years.  The Twig is an all-volunteer group of women who operate a thriving thrift store in the heart of Alexandria, organize the annual Historic Alexandria Homes Tour, and run additional community fundraisers—all to support the hospital and promote the health and well-being of the local community. Over the years, Twig contributions have helped fund vital medical equipment, patient services and hospital improvements that directly affect the quality of care provided to Alexandria residents.

“This gift represents both our history and our future,” said Twig President, Lori Ring. “Twig members have long believed a strong hospital is essential to a strong community.  As Inova Alexandria Hospital prepares to move into its new home, we are proud to continue our tradition of supporting exceptional care for our neighbors.”

The new Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark will replace the current hospital facility after more than 70 years of service to the community. The modern campus will expand access to advanced medical technology, specialty services and innovative care models while continuing the hospital’s longstanding commitment to compassionate, community-focused care.

The Twig’s latest gift will help support these efforts as part of Inova’s Eastern Region Development Plan, accelerated by philanthropic support to enhance healthcare services across Alexandria and southern Fairfax County.

In June 2025, half of the Twig’s current 3-year pledge for $500,000 was provided to support the Oakville Health Center and Inova Alexandria’s capital campaign that is funding the new hospital and health facilities at Landmark, along with other other development.

A $500,000 pledge to help the hospital achieve a Level 3 Trauma program was completed in 2024.

In 2022, The Twig provided $125,000 toward funding the on-site Simulation Skills Lab and the Patient Financial Assistance Fund.

Previously, The Twig’s pledge for $1 million helped the hospital renovate the Cardiovascular Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (CVNICU) with infrastructure upgrades, state-of-the-art clinical space, private patient rooms and aesthetically pleasing surroundings with space for families, patients, and caregivers. The CVNICU renovations increased patient room size, including private showers and bathrooms; space for family with room to sleep; and more functional space for nurses.
